ABOUT Angela Slate, M.B.A.
Creative Director, Educator, Designer
Angela Slate, M.B.A., is a Detroit native, Cass Technical High School alumna, and recipient of the prestigious Emilio Pucci Scholarship at the American Intercontinental University in Atlanta, GA. She later attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, graduating with honors and launching a dynamic career that has spanned design, education, and entrepreneurship.
Angela’s early career included internships at Barneys New York and a head designer role at Sergio Valente Jeans, where she honed her skills in product development and technical design—skills that took her across Asia, Europe, and the Caribbean. Over the following decade, she designed for iconic brands such as London Fog, Members Only, Perry Ellis, and sold her own lines to national boutiques, including the exclusive Patricia Field in New York City. Her freelance work included collaborations with Willi Smith, Pelle Pelle, and other notable labels.
She later co-owned a unisex boutique in Chicago specializing in custom apparel, while continuing to design for collections that sold to Macy’s, Carson’s, and specialty stores nationwide. Angela’s designs have been featured in Ebony Fashion Fair, award shows, trade exhibitions, and on popular television series including Martin, Living Single, and New York Undercover. Her work has been highlighted in leading publications such as Essence, WWD, The New York Times, Black Enterprise, and Ebony.
Beyond the Runway
Beyond fashion design, Angela has styled and produced for the music and film industries, working with artists such as the Isley Brothers, Johnny Kemp, and Genuine, as well as contributing wardrobe for the film New Jack City.
As an educator, Angela has taught at The College for Creative Studies, The Detroit School of the Arts, Cass Technical High School, and Wayne County Community College District, where she currently serves as an Adjunct Professor. She is passionate about teaching apparel design, textile science, fashion business, and trend forecasting, empowering students to bridge creativity with career success.
Angela’s design philosophy is rooted in lifelong learning and community engagement. She believes fashion education is not just about creating garments—it’s about cultivating visionaries who understand design, history, culture, and the business of fashion.
